Coop Faghandel, the construction and non-food division of Coop Norge SA—one of Norway’s leading retail companies—has chosen Swisslog as its partner for a major strategic expansion of its distribution center in Langhus, south of Oslo.
Coop Faghandel is experiencing strong growth, which requires increased warehouse capacity. The current project involves the construction of a new automated high-bay warehouse for pallets, which is being built adjacent to Coop Faghandel’s existing high-bay warehouse, delivered by Swisslog in 2021.
– To strengthen our position as Norway’s leading building materials chain and enable further growth in e-commerce, we want to offer Coop’s stores and customers the best selection on the market. To achieve this goal, we need to offer an ever-wider product range, high product availability, and on-time deliveries. The central warehouse in Langhus is the hub of our supply chain, and the investment in increased capacity and warehouse automation is an important step toward boosting our competitiveness,” says Gaute Glomlien, Head of Development at Coop Faghandel.
The selection of Swisslog as a partner was preceded by a comprehensive bidding process with high requirements for cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and scalability. Ultimately, Swisslog was also chosen as the partner for the new high-bay warehouse.
– With Swisslog, we are expanding and streamlining an established automation system that has already had a significant positive impact on our logistics operations. “We have built a strong partnership with Swisslog over several years, and this expansion can therefore be integrated into our existing system with minimal disruption to our day-to-day operations,” explains Gaute Glomlien, adding:
– The new solution, developed in close collaboration with Swisslog’s solution designers and our own logistics specialists, provides us with increased capacity, improved productivity and efficiency in the warehouse, and, overall, a well-thought-out and cost-effective solution.
Once the expansion is complete, the facility will cover a total area of 55,000 square meters and offer more than 100,000 automated pallet spaces. The facility will be equipped with an expanded ProMove conveyor system, an automated area for handling small items, and dedicated manual picking zones for bulky products.
The new expansion will include an automated receiving area and Swisslog's Vectura stacking craner, approximately 50,000 additional pallet spaces, and a 400-meter-long ProMove conveyor system. The entire operation will continue to be managed by Swisslog’s SynQ WMS warehouse management system, which ensures seamless integration between the new and existing facilities and enables efficient warehouse operations and future scalability.
– The fact that we have once again been entrusted with delivering a high-bay warehouse solution to Coop Faghandel is proof that, together, we have established a trusting strategic partnership. “We are incredibly proud to have the opportunity to continue this journey with Coop with the goal of developing a truly world-class warehouse,” says Johan Kristofferson, CEO and Sales Director at Swisslog Nordic.
Construction of the new automated pallet warehouse will begin in 2026 and is scheduled for completion in early 2028.
