The Food Group Paulig is taking a step toward more sustainable logistics by partnering with Einride, the freight technology company that provides digital, electric, and autonomous transportation. Together, they aim to reduce CO2e emissions by electrifying Paulig’s largest shipments of Santa Maria products in Sweden, with a planned emissions reduction of up to 87 percent on selected routes. The partnership is a step toward Paulig’s goal of halving its emissions across the entire value chain by 2030.
Through the partnership with Einride, a fleet of electric, digitally optimized heavy-duty trucks and advanced charging solutions is being introduced into Paulig’s Swedish transportation network. The largest deliveries of Santa Maria products in the Gothenburg area, covering a distance of 75,000 kilometers per year, are estimated to save 15.9 metric tons of CO2e annually, which corresponds to an 87 percent reduction in emissions compared to previous transport using HVO100 and biogas-powered trucks.
– Today, electrification is one of the most effective ways to reduce CO2e emissions from transportation. There are many existing solutions in logistics, and the key is to act quickly and implement them. “We are very proud to take this step with Einride. It reduces our environmental impact while maintaining the efficiency and reliability expected in the industry,” says Thomas Panteli, SVP of Supply Chain & Sourcing at Paulig.
Starting in August, two trucks with five trailers will be on Swedish roads. Einride’s digital mobility platform will optimize transportation and charging, ensuring that Santa Maria products are delivered in a more sustainable way between Paulig’s customers, factories, warehouses, and the Port of Gothenburg.
– This partnership with Paulig is an important step toward our vision of transforming freight transport in and outside of Sweden. Together, we are not only reducing emissions but also setting a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in the industry. “This partnership demonstrates how immediate action and innovation can lead to significant environmental benefits, which highlights Paulig’s genuine commitment and desire to be a leader in sustainability,” says Carl Ceder, VP of the Nordic Region at Einride.
On the Path to Electrifying All Transportation
Paulig is an international company with operations in 13 countries and production facilities and warehouses in six countries: Finland, Sweden, Estonia, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Belgium. Logistics accounts for approximately 4 percent of Paulig’s emissions within the value chain. Although this percentage may seem modest, logistics is a critical area where there are many solutions available to reduce emissions.
– It is absolutely essential that we act quickly in these areas. Electrifying our transportation not only benefits the environment but is also in line with our commitment to delivering quality products in a more sustainable way. We are currently reviewing our logistics flows to determine how we can achieve our goal of electrifying all transportation—both long- and short-haul—from our factories and warehouses in the coming years, ssays Thomas Panteli.
Paulig has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 % from its value chain and by 80 % from its own operations by 2030, compared to the 2018 baseline. These science-based climate targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and are in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree ambition.
