The transportation and logistics industry is becoming increasingly digitized, but a survey conducted by the mobility company SOTI shows that the industry still has a long way to go in implementing digital tools. SOTI’s survey shows that technology and systems are not keeping pace with developments in the industry, and that the main reason for this is a lack of integrated technology.
– The past year has highlighted the need for proper technology integration. Transportation and logistics companies are investing heavily in new technology right now, but we don’t see a coherent strategy for how that new technology should be implemented. Decision-makers in the transportation and logistics industry must understand that their organizations are wasting time, money, and productivity by failing to consider implementation and integration,” says Stefan Spendrup, Head of Northern and Western Europe at SOTI.
Three out of ten, 31 percent, say that older technology is not fully integrated with new systems, and nearly half of the respondents say that staff update multiple systems manually. This leads to inefficiencies and bottlenecks that could have been prevented if the systems had been implemented more effectively. Nearly one-third, 32 percent, cite the inability to access IT support or applications to troubleshoot and repair devices remotely as the main cause of downtime and delayed deliveries.
29 percent of the transportation and logistics industry also reports that information is not shared across all the systems in use, which can lead to both duplicate work and lower quality due to a lack of visibility. Furthermore, the problems do not end even if all systems are optimally implemented, as challenges also arise in user training. 26 percent cite insufficient or nonexistent staff training on the use of the technology as a cause of downtime and delayed deliveries. 70 percent of the surveyed executives in the transportation and logistics sector say that reducing downtime for mobile devices is a key business issue for their organization.
