ICA Sweden has signed an agreement with A.P. Möller-Maersk to transport approximately 1,800 containers annually via Maersk’s ”ECO Delivery Ocean” shipping solution, which replaces fossil fuels with biofuel alternatives.
The agreement covers the transport of both food and other goods that ICA purchases from Asia, South and North America, and Africa. Under the new agreement, ICA’s emissions from maritime transport are expected to be reduced by at least 80 percent, corresponding to 3,500 metric tons of CO2e annually. ICA has previously collaborated with Maersk on sea freight from Asia, South and North America, and Africa. The partnership is now being expanded to reduce the carbon footprint of these shipments. Through the new ECO Delivery agreements, emissions from maritime transport carried out by Maersk for ICA will be reduced by at least 80 percent, corresponding to a reduction of approximately 3,500 metric tons of CO2e in 2024. In addition, container hauls between the port and ICA’s unloading facility in Arendal will be carried out by an electric truck.
– We have long been actively working to reduce emissions from ICA’s land transportation through the use of various fossil-free fuels, improved transportation optimization, and the use of rail. Now we’re also taking the step to reduce emissions from our maritime transport, which feels absolutely fantastic! Being an early adopter in the transition for maritime freight also means that we’re contributing to technological development for the entire industry,” says Emma Lindström, Director of Logistics at ICA Sweden.
